From January 13 through February 14, more than 800 churches of all traditions will be embarking on a mission called exploreGod. The mission is to share our Christian faith with our unchurched neighbors and those of other religions by addressing 7 Big Questions that matter to believers and non-believers alike. From out of our respective traditions, the same message will be proclaimed from 800 pulpits addressing the same topic each Sunday using the same scriptures. Nothing like this has ever been attempted before in Chicagoland, and its potential of offering a unified Christian witness to our wider community cannot be underestimated.

Please pray for the Holy Spirit to inspire and lead this mission and these churches, including Knox, River Glen, and DuPage Presbyterian, here in Naperville and Bolingbrook. Pray for your friends and family members who do not attend church, and consider inviting them to one or more of our services to hear how these 7 Questions are addressed.

“The 7 Big Questions”

A city-wide sermon series involving 800 churches across Chicagoland.

January 13: Week 1 “Does Life Have A Purpose?”

Rev. Clinton Roberts

Most of us do not spend a lot of time thinking about our purpose. But the time we do can be pretty troubling. Even for those who believe that our lives are leading nowhere – finding answers to life’s questions can be difficult.

January 20: Week 2 “Is There A God?”

Darin Nettleton, M.div.

“Dear God, how come you did all those miracles in the old days, but don’t do any now?’ The good news is that God is not intimidated by our question – and neither is Knox.

Texts: Psalm 19:1-4, Romans 1:19-20 (Young Adult Mission Sunday)

January 27: Week 3 “Why Does God Allow Pain and Suffering?”

Rev. Clinton Roberts

Because God is greater than we are, we cannot fully understand or explain all of the problems we encounter. God understands our disappointment, suffering, pain, fear and doubt. “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” – Helen Keller

Texts: Job 14:1-10, 2 Corinthians 4:1, 7-10, 16-18

February 3:  Week 4 “Is Christianity Too Narrow?”

Rev. Clinton Roberts

To non-religious people, religion almost always includes some narrow minded things, such as legalism, judgement and hypocrisy. Following Jesus is different in that He sacrificed to get to us, rather than us sacrificing to get to Him.

Texts: Acts 17:16-31 (Super Bowl Sunday!)

February 10: Week 5 “Is Jesus Really God?”

Rev. Clinton Roberts

For all of us, there was a time when we didn’t fully understand who Jesus was. And if we are honest none of us knows for sure even now. That is the dynamic of faith. Over the course of history, billions of people have reached the conclusion that there is something special about Jesus. That He was no ordinary man. How did they come to that conclusion? Let’s take a look.

Texts: Isaiah 53:5-6, Mark 2:7-11, John 2:19

February 17: Week 6 “Is The Bible Reliable?”

Rev. Clinton Roberts

The Bible, though hard to understand at times is a collection of books written by real human beings that tell a divine, consistent story about God and about us. It’s very reliable. Let’s examine how and why that is.

Texts: 1 Timothy 3:16, Psalm 19:7-11, John 1:1-5 (Knox’s Annual Congregational Meeting)

February 24: Week 7 “Can I Know God Personally?”

Rev. Clinton Roberts

No one has ever been God… yet the Bible declares that God is Love itself. God loved the world so much that he sent His son to save us. Jesus is as Karl Barth said, “the humanity of God.”  The entire reason Jesus came to earth was so that everyone who trusts in Him can know God personally – the relationship we were created to enjoy.
